PostDoc Modelling Spatial Development in Urban Regions

Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Research Unit Landscape Dynamics studies patterns, causes and processes of landscape change. The ERC-project CONCUR develops and tests a theoretical model on how planning contributes to the development of urban regions. For this project WSL is looking for a PostDoc Modelling Spatial Development in Urban Regions

You will develop a set of tools to operationalize the theoretical model on how planning contributes to the development of urban regions that is currently designed by the CONCUR team. The research that you will carry out will be based on existing empirical data on the model’s components, i.e. governance, supra-regional conditions, and spatial information as contained in strategic spatial plans and will be carried out in collaboration with the team. You will adapt the theoretical model to the requirements of land change modelling by developing standardized questionnaires to collect pertinent information on governance and supra-regional conditions and by developing indicator calculation procedures to integrate regional spatial policies in models of land change.

A PhD in geography, urban studies, environmental sciences, or equivalent is required. Significant experience in land change modelling, spatial analysis and statistics, indicator development, GIS and R and knowledge about European spatial planning systems and strategic spatial plans is expected. You are communicative and very interested in developing innovative, problem-oriented, and pragmatic solutions. You have published in international journals and have excellent English skills.

Please send your complete application to Sabine Hirt, Human Resources WSL. Anna Hersperger, anna.hersperger@wsl.ch, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information on the position.
